During the KHA Annual Convention, May 12-13 in Lexington, Lars Enstrom and James Callanan of Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) Healthcare Industry Group will discuss, “How Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) Influence Health Care Delivery Patient Flow, Cost and Quality.”

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has set a goal of tying 50 percent of fee-for-service Medicare payments to quality or value through APMs, such as Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) or bundled payment arrangements by the end of 2018. As payers investigate alternative ways to transfer financial risk and quality accountability to providers, providers need to develop approaches that break down the historic “silo” nature of treatment patterns and develop pathways that respond to the particular pressures of each type of APM while improving the outcomes for patients.

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

Learn from early experiences about the necessary activities required to be successful...

A risk prediction model designed to forecast hospital readmissions based on patients’ electronic health records (EHR) for entire hospital stays was only modestly better than a model based on EHR data for just the day of admission, according to a new AHRQ-funded study. The study on predicting 30-day, all-cause hospital readmissions was based on data from nearly 33,000 hospital stays at six Dallas-Fort Worth hospitals from 2009 to 2010.

The authors stated their model was the first to use comprehensive EHR data from entire hospital stays. That model was shown to be only modestly better at predicting risk of readmission despite including many additional clinically relevant prognostic factors. The authors noted customized models that are disease-specific may be more effective in predicting readmission compared with the common multi-condition, readmission risk prediction model.

The study “Predicting All-Cause Readmissions Using Electronic Health Record Data From the Entire Hospitalization: Model Development...

KHA will host a webinar on May 3 to help you learn how the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) will impact reimbursement for your organization.

In April 2015, Congress passed MACRA, which made the news for eliminating the dysfunctional Sustainable Growth Rate formula. At the same time, it introduced significant changes in the Medicare Part B reimbursement model, involving the expansion of existing value-based incentives (PQRS, Meaningful Use and the Value-Based Modifier) as well as the introduction of entirely new incentive programs.

For webinar details and a registration form, view the brochure or register online today.

During the KHA Annual Convention, May 12-13 in Lexington, the Studer Group's Craig Deao will help attendees close the "Knowing-Doing Gap in Health Care." In 2000, Jeffery Pfeffer and Robert I. "We work really hard to figure out what we need to do, yet we fail to implement what we learn in the process."

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the “Knowing-Doing Gap” in health care
  •  Implement three evidence-based strategic objectives in your health care organization

An estimated 70% of all decisions regarding a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, hospital admission and discharge are based on laboratory test results.

LabCorp believes a true Laboratory partner should provide more than reference testing services. In the face of declining reimbursement rates and increasing focus on patient outcomes, LabCorp offers partnership models that go beyond the traditional reference testing arrangements.

LabCorp provides non-traditional laboratory partnerships with a focus on cost savings and/or revenue generation for the hospital system. Examples include:

Revenue generation through a Cooperative Testing Arrangement or Outreach Acquisition Cost reduction through a Technical Support Arrangement or Laboratory Outsource Arrangement Revenue generation and cost reduction through a Joint Equity Venture Arrangement Population health management through ACO/ACE/CIN Exclusive and Preferred Provider Arrangements Declining...

SB 20 SignaturesAs the 2016 Kentucky General Assembly session is coming to a close, KHA is excited to share the news that Governor Matt Bevin has signed SB 20 into law. This was KHA’s top priority during this legislative session and its passage is a huge victory for Kentucky’s hospitals. This legislative session could not have been a success without the hard work of all the Association's membership. Your advocacy was invaluable.

Additionally, KHA extends special thanks to KHA Legislative Committee Chair Joe Koch and the Association's diligent lobbying team – Sarah S. Nicholson, Ronny Pryor, Renee Craddock and Gene McClean. KHA is also grateful to Senate President Robert Stivers and House Speaker Greg Stumbo for their work on this issue. Finally, the Association is extremely appreciative of Dr. Ralph Alvarado for sponsoring...
